Detectives investigating the murder of Natalie McGuinness in Sligo yesterday believe that despite a man brandishing a knife at the scene, the victim may have been strangled, not stabbed.
Mr O’Grady also asked that his client receive a psychiatric evaluation which should be “done on a matter of urgency”, and also requested that he be committed to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, Co Dublin.
Mr O’Grady said he and Conroy’s family would like hospital authorities to give the appropriate help needed.
He is to appear in court again next Thursday.
Sergeant Patrick Harney gave evidence that Mr Conroy of The Mews, Mail Coach Road in Sligo made no reply when he was charged with murder in the early hours of this morning.
Conroy was led from the court under heavy security and driven to custody in Castlerea Prison. He was told by Inspector Kilcoyne that the defendant’s wounds were self-inflicted “and he is a threat to himself”. The inspector told the judge that Mr Conroy had inflicted wounds on himself with a weapon.

The judge repeated his custody order and instructed that Conroy be put on suicide watch and be given psychiatric attention.
