105-year-old Afghan refugee seeks better life in Europe

The woman said that her 17-member family spent 20 days trying to reach Europe.

“We had problems many times”.

Bibihal Uzbeki, from Kunduz, Afghanistan, is among tens of thousands of migrants who have traveled for thousands of miles fleeing war and poverty to search for a happier, safer future in Europe.

At 105-years-old she still dreams of a better life for herself and her family.

Arriving in Croatia, she told volunteers that sometimes her 67-year-old son or teenage grandson carried her on their backs as they made the arduous journey. Spokesman Domagoj Dzigumovic says authorities have been checking whether she needs medical attention. I have scars on my head’.

He says “we don’t want them (the migrants) to be dispersed along the length of the border”.

“My legs hurt, but I’m fine”, Uzbeki said in Farsi, speaking through a translator while sitting on the floor inside a Red Cross tent.

Uzbeki, her children and grandchildren chose to leave Afghanistan after two of her sons were killed.

The centenarian and her family hope to eventually make it to Sweden, where a few of her grandchildren live.
