We all must play role in keeping Halloween safe for children

Have reflective tape on costumes so cars can see the kids. Children should be dressed in highly visible costumes so drivers can easily see them. Kids could also opt for face paint instead of masks, but the American Academy of Pediatrics warns against colored contacts. We had special treats a year ago – 1,000 little goodie bags with mini-comics and candy – and we ran out.

Drivers, be extra cautious of the increased amount of people out and about.

Safe Kids wants to let parents know how they can keep their kids safe on Halloween.

But it is also a time that we should be on alert, working together to keep children safe from potential harm. Luckily, there are several preventative measures that parents and guardians can take to make trick-or-treating as safe as possible.

Others weren’t fussed on the idea of trick or treating.

Children should not enter homes or apartments unless accompanied by an adult, and should not accept rides from strangers. Use sidewalks wherever possible when you’re walking around a neighborhood.

“We’re hoping that no trick-or-treating goes on after the late hours meaning 8, 9-o-clock”, said Covington.

And parents should insist that children travel in groups with adequate adult supervision.

Fatal accidents involving children crossing streets increase four and a half times on Halloween night, according to numerous studies over the past few years.

Between 2007 and 2014, Halloween was the holiday with the fifth highest number of emergency department visits by children 18 and younger.

Police across the area say they’ll be aware and on patrol both to protect Trick-or-Treaters, but also to stop potential vandalism and crime.

Make sure your children know your phone number(s) and address in case you get separated.

Make sure the costumes you buy are flame resistant. Watch out for cars that are turning or backing up, and never dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars.

Tell your children to bring home their candy to be inspected before they eat it. Put aside anything that looks suspicious.
