Cisco snaps up cybersecurity firm Lancope for $452 million

Broadly speaking, unusual activity on a network that doesnt fit typical patterns can often trigger warnings that an attack is underway or that a system somewhere on the network has been compromised. With over 50 billion devices expected to become connected by 2020, Cisco is expecting a ramp up in network breach attempts, as threat actors will have more opportunities to break corporate security.

Cisco Corporate Development Vice President Rob Salvagno said, “As enterprises digitize, security challenges rapidly evolve”. Based in Alpharetta, GA, the firm offers services, including network behavior analytics, threat monitors, and security intelligence to shield companies against highly sophisticated cybersecurity threats. “Real time visibility and understanding of the behavior of every machine or device on the network becomes critical in adapting the ability of enterprises to identify and respond to the next wave of cyber threats”, Salvagno said in a statement.

This would be Cisco’s fourth deal in security over the past 12 months. “We are now dealing with a new world where more and more devices are creating a broader and more diverse attack surface that can be exploited”.

Rick Holland, a vice president and principal analyst at Forrester research, tells Information Security Media Group that the deal is a good move for both companies.

Cisco and Lancope will advance Cisco’s Security Everywhere strategy of providing advanced threat protection across the full attack continuum-before, during and after an attack.

That involves essentially turning entire networks into security sensors.

On Monday, Cisco announced its intent to acquire ParStream, a privately-held company in Cologne, Germany that provides an analytics database.

Cisco’s security business generated $1.74 billion for its fiscal year ended in July, a 12 percent increase year over year.
