Former Mobile BayBears manager Andy Green will be the next manager of the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports.
He was named the Southern League (AA) Manager of the Year back-to-back seasons in 2013-14 and was promoted to Diamondbacks third base coach for the 2015 season.
Green, 38, played parts of four seasons in the majors before starting his coaching career in 2011.
Hired Thursday as the Padres’ new manager, it’s Green’s job to figure out how to get a talented roster to compete instead of collapse. I’m also glad the manager search is over and now Preller and the Padres can focus on making changes to the players on the field this winter.
At this point A.J. Preller doing unsurprising would be the surprising move. Black (2007-15), Bruce Bochy (1995-2006), Jim Riggleman (1993-94) and Greg Riddoch (1990-92) all arrived as rookie skippers.
The Padres announced at the conclusion of the 2015 season that Murphy would not return. Roberts had interviewed with the Mariners open spot and Roberts for the Padres spot after already being surpassed last season when the Padres picked Pat Murphy as their interim manager. He was 219-189 in four seasons as a manager in Arizona’s farm system.

Green is the fifth consecutive manager the Padres hired with no previous major league managerial experience. He then guided Advanced Rookie Missoula to the Pioneer League championship in 2012.
