How To Keep Your Home Cool During Hot Weather

The recent spell of hot weather has led many people desperately seeking ways to keep their house cool as the temperature outside rises. During heat waves, it can be frustrating to come home from a day in the sun, or a baking hot office, to find that the house feels warm and stuffy.

Homeowners that are looking to keep their properties cool can find many ways that are beneficial instantly and also deliver long-lasting results to help control a properties temperature year-round.

Get Insulated

Normally associated with the winter months, installing loft insulation during the summer can be an eco-friendly way to reduce temperature. Having quality insulation in your property will reduce the amount of heat escaping during the cold winter months, but will also help to keep it cool during the summer.

During warmer weather, loft insulation helps to cool a building by preventing heat from entering and from cool air from leaving via the roof. Fitting insulation during the summer is both energy efficient and practical as access to attic or loft space is required, which would cause an increase in escaped heat during the winter.

Close Curtains

Sometimes simple tricks can make a big difference to the temperature of your home. Keeping curtains closed in the bedrooms and other upstairs rooms is an easy way to get your home’s temperature to drop. With hot air rising and the sun shining through closed windows, the upper rooms of your home can become incredibly hot compared to the lower levels. To keep the upstairs of a property cool, ventilate your home during the evening and keep curtains and blinds closed during the day, or when the room in not in use.

Install Air Conditioning

An expensive but worthwhile option, having air conditioning in your home will help you feel cool and relaxed when at home. Modern air-con systems are relatively quick at lowering the temperature of a room, meaning that the system does not need to function on a timer, or be pre-set to control a room’s temperature.

If you do decide to install an air conditioning unit, then you should look into measures that ensure that it will run in the most efficient, economic and eco-friendly manner possible to help yourself keep costs fairly low and to help the environment. Ensuring that all windows and doors are closed during use, or using units only in rooms that are frequently used.

Before Making any Decisions, Have your Home Air Tested

When looking to improve temperature control in any building, it is important to know a building’s air flow in order to locate areas where cool or hot air is entering or escape a building. For many new builds, it is compulsory to have a valid air testing certificate to show that the property has a high level of energy efficiency.

The process of air testing is relatively simple, with a professional company setting up large fans inside your home to locate air leaks in your home when all windows, doors and vents are closed. Passing an air test, and having a certificate as proof is a worthy thing as should you ever decide to relocate, homes that are ‘air tight’ and more energy efficient tend to make higher profit.

Summer heat can really be unbearable that’s why we look for ways to keep us cool. There are many ways we can do this. As mentioned above, get insulated, close the curtains and so on and so forth. I agree with all the tips discussed in this post. Turning the AC is definitely the best thing to do but we can’t just do that 24/7, there are other alternatives to this.

  2. Try trapping cool night air in by closing windows in the morning. When reopening windows for ventilation later in the day, only open them on sides of the house that the sun is NOT shining on.
