Florida Student Wears Blackface for Nicki Minaj Costume

The teen was dressed as Nicki Minaj during her school’s homecoming costume party.

When shown a photo of a man wearing sunglasses dressed as a Middle Eastern, a few students believed the image was extremely racist, while others seemed to be unaffected by the costume.

The teen tweeted a collage of photos of her and her friends purportedly at the school-sanctioned event. The Twitter users promised to decrease her chances of getting into the university for her “racist” behavior. And this year that includes a whole lot of Kanye and Nicki Minaj – and continued controversy over the unfortunate American tradition of blackface. The costume featured a leopard leotard with a stuffed fake buttock section.

The teen took down her account over the backlash, writing, “I sincerely apologize for my actions”. And then there’s the “Call Me Caitlyn” costume, a way to wear someone’s transgender identity, something that they have likely been struggling with for their entire life, for just one night as a cheeky joke. After the post went viral, the girl received responses such as, “I’m honestly amazed by people who wear blackface in 2015”.

Unsurprisingly, her insensitive costume took the internet by storm, and she was soon vilified by fellow Twitter users as many threatened to report her to her high school, as well as her prospective college, University of Florida. However, the tweets to the university seem to be continuing to pour in despite the removal of the “offensive” photographs. “It’s for HALLOWEEN, the one time a year it is okay”. He was open regarding his frustration with racially offensive Halloween costumes, and stated, “They say they think it’s amusing”.
