Napa – Brendan Steele fired a three-under par 69 on Saturday and will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Frys.com Open in search of a wire-to-wire win.

“The way I like to look at it, if the leader goes out and plays well and stretches out with the lead, good for him”. Sixteen players were separated by our shots.

His 71 left him eight shots adrift in a tie for 39th.

McIlroy almost got brained by an incoming tee shot on the 17th hole. “It would’ve put me out of my misery, to be honest with you”.

A 25-foot birdie at the first hole was an ideal start for Steele, who shot an opening 63, but he failed to fire for the rest of the round and finished with a 2-under-par 70 at the Silverado Resort in the opening event of the PGA Tour season.

Steele had to settle for pars on the closing three holes at Silverado that tend to produce birdies, giving him a 2-under 70 on a course getting firmer and featuring much stronger pin positions.

“It went well”, said Rose, back in action on the PGA Tour just two weeks after tying for second place at the Tour Championship, the final event of the 2014-15 season. At the urging of the sponsors of the year-end events, who wanted a few pull to help them bring in bigger, more lucrative sponsorships for their tournaments, the Tour turned things a little bit inside out, creating a new, non-calendar-year wrap-around schedule.

The 32-year-old’s holed five birdies on his card to ensure that he maintained the lead with a two-under round of 70.

Ko overcame a double bogey with two late birdies in a 3-under 69, and Park bounced back from a second-round 74 with a 67 on Sky 72’s Ocean Course.
