Subaru debuts new Impreza 5-Door Concept

Subaru has taken the wraps off the 2017 Impreza 5-door concept at the ongoing 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, with a newfound focus on “dynamic” design and a “solid” aesthetic foundation rather than the drive-train or tech.

Subaru says the “Impreza 5-Door Concept” not only hints at the next Impreza, but at the future model line-up as a whole and – good news – there’s not a lot to be anxious about here.

That 3rd generation Impreza wasn’t exactly stunning to look at. It’s clean and sharp with a few nice lines, though it’s all a bit overdone. At this moment, the company did not reveal anything except that it would be capable of seating five people. Now we have details on the Viziv Future concept, which previews Subaru’s next-generation SUV design language, and in particular the design of the next-generation XV Crosstrek due out for the 2018 model year. A more powerful boxer engine with improved output and efficiency, better handling chassis and additional equipment go without saying.

There are changes to Subaru’s symmetrical motor all-wheel drive system, too: The propeller shaft has been eliminated, and “thanks to the vectoring effect of actively controlling front/rear driving force distribution”, Subaru claims better maneuverability. The engine is most likely to be 1.6-litre turbocharged unit.

New connectivity and telematics features that provide up-to-the-minute information on traffic, weather and other conditions along the route ahead are also part of the package. The C-shaped LED combination lights stand out. The concept gives a miss to B-pillar and the rear doors slide towards the tail section like a van from olden days.
