From his album smashing records left, right, and center, to recording the James Bond theme song for SPECTRE (‘Writing’s on the Wall’), and even going to Ibiza and letting his hair down.
The singer spoke candidly with BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac about his unusual creative process earlier this evening (October 29).
But he added that he felt very “naive” about the whole experience: ‘I play a few of my songs to my parents and they just don’t like it. But this was the only song that my mum and dad really liked and it was a grower, so I was feeling really confident about it.
But the “Stay With Me” hitmaker admitted he is “the worst” at chatting up guys, joking he just “shows them [his] Grammys’ to win over men who catch his eye”. It is impossible for everyone to like Bond whoever plays him.
“I genuinely thought this was going to be the hardest album – it still could be – but I refuse to think like that because this is what I do and what I love to do”.
‘That initial release with the mixed response, I was like I’m still trying to find my feet, but when it went to number one, it was just unbelievable so yeah it was incredible’. I’ve got the title and I’ve got two songs I’m absolutely in love with.
“I write love songs and I’m forever going in and out of relationships and wanting to say things about life and love, and if I had nothing to say over the a year ago then that’s mental because so much has happened to me”, he said.
The 23-year-old singer often wakes with song ideas and he wishes he could turn “every single thought” he has into a song but if he did he would be swamped with new tracks he wouldn’t be able to edit down.
“With the whole doing the song and finding out we had a chance to do the song was so mad – it was a dream come true for me”.
