More than 60 emergency personnel rushed to the scene after the collapse was reported around 10:30 a.m. They say one person was found dead on arrival.
Firefighters on the top floor of a midtown Manhattan building look… Police have blocked off the street.
Be Civil – It’s OK to have a difference in opinion but there’s no need to be a jerk.
It is unclear what caused the collapse. Scaffolding and netting were still up on the building, and there was no sign of rubble or visible damage.
Fortuna Realty Group, the developer that owns the building, did not immediately comment on the incident. Dogs will be used to search the site to make sure there are no other workers trapped in the debris. City Buildings Department records show a permit for full demolition of the eight-storey building was issued in May.
The building – in the process of being demolished so it could be turned into a posh hotel – was filled with construction workers.

Robert Bankston, a demolition contractor who formerly worked on the site, said the two neighboring buildings were sound when the project began.
