Severe storms rip homes apart, strand cars in Texas

A tornado watch was in effect for the Austin and San Antonio areas through midday Friday.

The pastor of a local church said members of his congregation reported hearing something that sounded like a loud train horn, while others reported hearing only a brief whistling sound.

The video below was taken on Friday morning in New Braunfels, Texas, northeast of San Antonio.

There were no immediate reports of anybody hurt.

“The worst part is going to be the rain”, she said.

The Medina County Sheriff told KSAT that several buildings in D’Hanis, TX were damaged, including the Buckhorn Saloon which was built in the late 1800s and the fire station.

A combination of warm, humid air and a dip, or “trough”, in the jet stream is causing the severe storms, which may bring more severe weather to the area through Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning and tornado watch for large parts of central Texas.

In San Antonio, students had to be rescued from two school buses which became swamped in rapidly rising water while they were taking students to class.

Potential tornadoes have touched down in the San Antonio area where flash flooding is submerging roads and overflowing waterway banks. The National Weather Service Reported that the Wimberley High School and the Wimberley Community Center were being opened as emergency shelters for people who were forced out of their homes. Many schools in the Austin area have also closed, including Texas State in San Marcos and Round Rock.
