Microsoft makes it easier to upgrade to Windows 10, even for pirates
Apparently, you can turn off Windows 10’s nagging, deactivating the recommended installation prompt, but you will have to keep Automatic Downloads on a permanent leash if you wish to avoid the download. Thus, the company is kicking off a Windows 10 upgrade pilot for pirates in the USA “to ease the upgrade of non-Genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1”.

Microsoft stated that from early next year, it planned to provide a “recommended update”, including an upgrade to Windows 10 in its Windows Update system.
Microsoft is willing to go to great length to get you to upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft’s ambitious goal with Windows 10 is to get the operating system onto as many as one billion devices, which will include desktops, laptops, tablets, convertibles, HoloLens, Surface Hub, Internet of Things devices and Xbox gaming consoles.
The new Microsoft OS already holds an impressive adoption rate – racking up 110 million installations in just 11 weeks – and is expected to receive its first major update sometime next week.
Windows 10 is so revolutionary that it will soon download itself to your PC.
Microsoft is also going to release an improved version of its Media Creation Tool that’s used for creating bootable DVDs and USB keys to install Windows 10.
Microsoft was criticized in September when users complained that Windows 10 was being automatically downloaded to a few computers even if they didn’t indicate they were interested in upgrading.
In an October 29 blog post, Terry Myerson, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, laid out Microsoft’s plans to make its Windows 10 upgrade more widely available to users.
Microsoft said it is encouraging all Windows users to upgrade their systems to Windows 10, saying the latest OS is “safer, faster, and full of innovations”.
Windows 10 will soon appear for users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 among “optional updates”, Microsoft’s regular list of security and other software updates, the company said Thursday.
Those who don’t like the new OS will have 31 days to roll back to their previous version of Windows. “Our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to non-genuine Windows devices”, Myerson wrote in a May 15 blog post [emphasis added]. According to the company, numerous pirates who upgraded to Windows 10 were then compelled to purchase a genuine Windows 10 activation code through the Windows 10 store.

Compared with the growth of Windows 7 and 8, these numbers are impressive, and they arguably contradict the narrative that consumers are no longer interested in PCs.
