“My intention is to use as many youth players as possible for this match and I would have liked to use more”, Luis Enrique told a news conference yesterday.

Villanovense Coach Julio Cobos said after the Copa del Rey draw with Barcelona that there was no “miracle” involved, only hard work. Barca will be confident of finishing off the tie in the second leg at the Camp Nou on December 2.

The Spanish champions were held in the first leg of their Copa del Rey opener at the Estadio Romero Cuerda with Douglas playing the full 90 minutes.

Midfielders Sergi Samper and Gerard Gumbau, both 20 and who have already featured for the first team, are included along with attacking duo Aitor Cantalapiedra and Wilfrid Kaptoum, both aged 19. But they also had their fair share of chances as well. Facing Barcelona in the round of 32 in a two-legged tie.

Villanovense nearly found a way through for the opening goal when Elias weaved his way past a couple of challenges, but his low strike was saved by Jordi Masip. It took them until 2003 to earn promotion to the Segunda Division B, and they still have yet to really establish themselves there. With seating for around 2,200 fans, the stadium was given a boost with temporary stands added to push the capacity to 10,000 in order accommodate the crowds who wanted to see one of the world’s biggest sides in action, but there were no goals for them to cheer on the night. “The result is what it is and now we have the second leg still to play”.
