A win for Texas A&M would officially make the Aggies eligible for a bowl game.

When Allen was pulled during last weekend’s 23-3 loss to Ole Miss, Aggies head coach opted for Jake Hubenak, a junior college transfer, instead of Murray, who reportedly had a verbal sideline altercation with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital during the Alabama game.

On Friday, Sumlin named Kyler Murray the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against South Carolina, the team announced via its Twitter account. He will replace sophomore Kyle Allen who started the first seven games of the season at quarterback.

It will be the first career start for Murray, a five-star recruit with a decorated prep resume.

Like Allen in the class of 2014, Murray was one of the highest-ranked quarterback prospects in the class of 2015, a five-star rated the No. 33 prospect overall according to the 247Sports composite. He has played sparingly in five games this season, completed 54.8 percent of his passes (17-for-31) with a touchdown and two interceptions while rushing for 92 yards on 18 carries. The true freshman went 43-0 as a high school quarterback at Allen High School, leading his team to three consecutive state championships.

Now, he has an opportunity to turn Texas A&M’s season around, as there is plenty more football left to be played. The official news came shortly after multiple outlets including the Houston Chronicle reported that Sumlin will name Kyler Murray the Aggies’ starting quarterback.
