Oregon AAA Offers Halloween Safety Tips

– Put down the electronic devices when walking, they can be distracting and prevent you from seeing or hearing on-coming cars. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

Children under the age of 12 years should not be alone at night without adult supervision. Adding reflective gear to your costume is also a good option to make yourself and your child more visible.

Encourage children to use face paint and/or make-up rather than hoods, wigs or masks that can block vision.

Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Chaperons should also make sure kids only take candy from outside a home and never go inside, and parents should make sure kids only eat factory-wrapped candy, not homemade ones by strangers. If children are attending Halloween parties at other homes, tell them to be alert for ways out of the home in the instance of an emergency. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
