Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Korniyenko are spending a full year on the global Space Station to conduct research on long-duration spaceflight.

Scott Kelly is breaking space records set previously by USA astronauts with the latest two being the maximum number of cumulative days in space by any United States astronaut and number of consecutive days spent by an U.S. astronaut in space. Kelly, along with his identical twin brother Mark, are part of the NASA Twins Study, which aims to observe the effects of zero gravity on Kelly’s brain and body and then compare it to the records of his twin brother Mark, who was a former US astronaut. The study will have 10 experiments in 4 areas: human physiology, behavioral health, microbiology and molecular.

On Thursday, he finally achieved that goal, surpassing the previous record set by Spanish-American Astronaut Michael López-Alegría, who spent 215 days in space in 2007.

“There are certain senses and things that seem like, wow that was so, so long ago”. According to Kelly, sometimes, he feels as if he has been disconnected with those back home.

“I kinda forgot what it’s like to live down there”.

NASA’s yearlong spaceman, Scott Kelly, is taking his first spacewalk just hours before setting a new USA flight record.

Russian cosmonaut, Gennady Padalka, now holds the world record for most days (cumulative) spent in space.
