Dad encourages girls, parents to choose costumes that are ‘more than cute’

This Halloween, one dad is making it his personal mission to ensure that girls are provided costume options that are “more than cute”.

‘When choosing a costume, boys are told they can be anything they want: courageous, scary, smart, adventurous and more, ‘ web designer John Marcotte writes on his Heroic Girls website. “Meanwhile, the girls’ costume aisles are usually fairies and princesses, and this tells them that the only thing society values about them is their appearance”. Marcotte is in the studio to talk to Christianne about the movement.

But, like his daughters Anya, 10, and Stella, 8, a lot of little girls actually want to be full-on badass superheroes. We think girls dream just as big as boys.

Marcotte’s #MoreThanCute campaign encourages parents to post pictures of their daughters in empowering costumes, such as superheroes, doctors, or astronauts.

The #MoreThanCute hashtag has picked up steam, with parents from all around the world posting photos of their daughters dressed up in their “more than cute” Halloween costumes.

What we love most about this campaign is that it is not only encouraging girls to think outside of the box by donning more traditionally “male” costumes, but it also sends the message that it’s OK to wear all the frills and princess attire you want – as long as girls know they have the choice.

‘We will collect them to demonstrate that we value girls because of their strength, their creativity, their intelligence and their ambition, ‘ he says.

Sick of the costumes on offer to little girls, a father has now stepped up and made a decision to do something about it. Still, I’m pretty sure they won’t be able to help being super cute!
