Dermatologists warn of ‘sunburn art’ dangers | News 12 Long Island

Many have taken to social media to show off their skin using #sunburnart and #tantattoo.

Sunburn art is obtained by purposely covering up only one part of your body by either drawing shapes on the body with sunblock or adhering shaped stickers. So if you’re turning red you’re actually damaging the first few layers of skin in a way which is definitely going to put you at risk for skin cancers in the future. Posters are showing off their skin seared with pictures and patterns.

The Skin Cancer Foundation released a statement today denouncing sunburn art. “A sunburn is not only painful – it’s unsafe, and comes with consequences”.

Dermatologist Anita Mehta with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic tells KTRH that any sun burns increase your risk for cancer.

According to the Foundation, sustaining five or more sunburns as a child increases your lifetime risk of melanoma by 80 per cent.

We’ve all had weird tan lines or a splotch of pink skin after missing a spot while applying sunscreen.
