Google launches a new app to find out Who’s Down

Apple CEO Time Cook has confirmed that its News app has garnered over 40 million users only a week after it was made available in the United Kingdom and Australia. The app can help Google increase engagement among its users on Google Hangouts. Leave it to Google to remedy that, as its new Who’s Down app has debuted with zero fanfare, but a lot of potential for practical application. The technology giant this morning launched a new app called “Who’s Down” on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

To use the feature, tap on the search button on your Android app which appears as a magnifying glass in the lower-right corner of the screen.

One key step is to ensure that your media files are stored on an SD card, if there is one, also meaning you are less likely to run out of space. This can range from a quiet evening with a few close friends or can go up to an adventure filled night. Slide the toggle from on to off, and anyone you’ve connected with can tell that you’re available for… whatever.

On the fun side of apps, TouchArcade reports that iPhone users that play Minecraft Pocket Edition can download a Halloween Costume Pack that allows players to dress their characters up as pigs, cows, spiders, zombies, and more.

Google has been trying hard to make its mark in the social network segment. “I think he might not even be a doctor”, another user wrote.

The new app from Google offers similar functionality to Apple’s Find My Friends tool and Foursquare’s Swarm app.

Many questions still remain about this app; it’s unknown when (or if) Google will get rid of the invite-only requirement and where it’s pulling your list of friends from, though one presumes it’s from email or Google+ contacts. The app is free and has mostly positive reviews in the Apple App Store.
