Mike Williamson set for loan switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves have shipped nine goals in those games and boss Kenny Jackett spoke of the urgent need to bring in a defender on loan earlier this week.

Asked about the thinking behind the loan, Williamson said: “Initially short term, but speaking to the manager, it’s with a view for longer”.

If he joins the centre half will help ease a growing injury crisis, with Kortney Hause and Ethan Ebanks-Landell on the sidelines and Dominic Iorfa a doubt for Saturday’s crucial West Midlands derby against Birmingham City.

The defender played an integral part in the Magpies’ Champions League chasing season back in 2011-12; a campaign which would see Newcastle finish the division in fifth (ahead of both Liverpool and Chelsea).

“The bigger the games the better for me, derbies are always a special occasion and more than just three points on the line”.

The furthest United have got in the competition is the Quarter-finals, which was back in 1964 when they lost 2-1 to Preston North End. “I am here to enjoy myself, learn and experience a new culture and a new way of doing things”.

“I’m hoping to take the opportunity and push forward”.

“It can be hard (not playing), very frustrating”. All of us have got an in-built desire to succeed and do well. That’s why we play.

“He has a good pedigree, he’s a good player and has experience of the Championship and the Premier League. He’s ready and available for selection”.
