The former National Football League running back and current media personality ran New York City for the second straight year, after finishing in 5:14 last year.

In the final kilometres leading up to the finish, it was obvious that Keitany was going to take her second consecutive championship.

Manuela Schär, the Swiss racer who finished second on Sunday, thinks McFadden’s climbing ability sets her apart, especially on a course like New York’s, with its numerous bridges and hills.

Other top Kenyans running Sunday include Stanley Biwott, the runner-up to Kipsang at the 2014 London Marathon, and reigning Boston Marathon women’s champ Caroline Rotich. “I’m looking forward in the future, maybe next year, I’ll come back again and work hard to win a New York Marathon”. Peter Ciaccia, the race director, said he was still in possession of the first Heatsheet he had earned as a marathoner.

Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 victor, placed seventh in 2:13:32 for his eighth top-10 in 10 New York appearances. That was American Tatyana McFadden, who shattered the New York City Marathon women’s wheelchair course record.

“I am well prepared”, said Kipsang, per Nation.co.ke. Tufa couldn’t stick with the pace and was caught by Mergia, while Moreira finished fourth in 2:25:53, just over a minute ahead of Daunay. He now prefers to think of it as “just like a normal long run in training” as part of his preparation for New York. Part of the reason was that during last year’s marathon, notable for high winds that made conditions hard for the runners and walkers, Mendes dropped out of the halfway point because his muscles started tensing up. Last year’s average time was 4:34:45.
