Police say the auto went up on a sidewalk in the Bronx and hit the group of adults and children.
Police say a man, whose age wasn’t immediately available, died at the scene. At least four others were injured.
His 10-year-old granddaughter, Nyanna Aquil, still in her cat costume, died after being rushed to the hospital with head trauma and internal bleeding, her mother, Natalia Perez, told the paper.
Unger was hospitalized in stable condition.
Police have ruled out road rage being behind the deaths and investigators are looking into whether a medical episode was to blame, the Daily News reported.
The driver of the vehicle and three pedestrians, including two young girls, were taken to Jacobi Hospital, police said.
Witnesses described a scene of carnage, and not knowing whether it was real or a series of gruesome Halloween props.
The path of the vehicle left a bloody trail of bodies and costumes, according to the Associated Press.
Cotza said, “I just grabbed a whole bunch of towels and ran outside”. “He was driving, and he might have started his seizures, and he bumped the vehicle in front of him”.
Her grandmother, Miriam Perez, said she was heartbroken by the loss of her husband.
“He was taking them trick-or-treating last night to have a great time, and he didn’t get to come home”.
“All I can think of is, I hope he makes it, I hope he makes it”, said Cotza.
Mr.de Blasio said the NYPD’s collision-investigation squad would continue its inquiry into the incident. His granddaughter, Nyanna Aquil, 10, and Kristian Leka, 24, all Bronx residents, were both transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where they were pronounced dead, according to police.
