He also urged the outgoing Union President, Jakaya Kikwete and Outgoing Isles President who is also the CCM presidential candidate, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein to see how best to resolve the problem so as to save Zanzibar and the Union from shame.

“Let us strive for peace and national unity”, Magufuli said in his first speech since being declared victor of the country’s presidential poll.

“It is from the election manifesto of the party, but also it is his mission to reform the government and change the way the government is working to make sure the government is effective, the government is delivering, reduce bureaucracy and change how the technocrats [behave] in their offices”, Nnauye said.

His running mate Samia Suluhu Hassan will become Tanzania’s first ever female vice president.

“Why should I be sad?”

One commentator in Dar es Salaam said: “It challenges the imagination as to how the opposition and their external supporters could think that a person who left CCM in July after failing in his bid for candidacy, after serving this party in government for many years, could suddenly cross to the opposition and start campaigning against the same party that he belonged to only a few weeks ago … and expect to be elected president”.

But Tanzania’s vote was not without troubles. The islands were reported to be calm on Friday, according to an AFP reporter.

Magufuli, a former chemistry teacher who celebrated his 56th birthday on Thursday as results were announced, ran on an anti-corruption platform, and secured a convincing victory over his closest rival, former prime minister Edward Lowassa who won 40%.

In Zanzibar, elections for the archipelago’s parliament and president were annulled on Wednesday.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday by its Directorate of Presidential Communication, the State House expressed regret on claims by the Secretary General of the Civic United Front (CUF), Mr Seif Sharif Hamad, that his request to seek audience with President Kikwete over the matter has been turned down.

“As from November 2, there will be no government here, Shien will not be the president anymore”, Hamad said.
