Obama, Sharif call for ‘sustained’ Indo-Pak talks

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday assured US President Barack Obama of Islamabad’s resolve to take effective action against Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its affiliates responsible for November 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

President Obama and Prime Minister Nawaz agreed that improvement in Pakistan-India bilateral relations would greatly enhance prospects for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

India has railed at the mention of Kashmir in the joint statement issued after the Obama-Sharif talks.

“A joint statement released after the meeting also stated the commitment of the two leaders to an “enduring” partnership”, a “prosperous Pakistan, and a more stable region”. He also shared dossiers with allegations of an Indian hand in terrorism in Pakistan, seeking to involve the United States as a referee.

Earlier Sharif met US Vice President Joe Biden over breakfast and discussed regional, political and security issues, particularly the cooperation on war against terrorism, according to official Pakistani news agency APP. He said that both the countries have a 70-year long relationship. “The secretary thanked Nawaz Sharif for Pakistan’s continued facilitation of reconciliation discussions between the democratically elected Afghan government and members of the Taliban”, Kirby said.

“They need to continue to discuss with each other their mutual concerns about security and that they need greater engagement, because frankly, better dialogue, improved dialogue, greater cooperation between those two countries is important for all the security of the entire region”.

Under the authorities of the national action plan Pakistan is taking action against a wide range of terrorist groups inside the country.

At the same time, the official said the United States welcomed Pakistan’s commitment in a joint statement with the United States on Thursday to counter all militant groups, including the Haqqani network, a militant group operating inside Afghanistan that is considered close to Pakistani intelligence.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has urged the global community to play its due role for preventing India’s belligerent actions, which are threat to peace and security in South Asia.

Ties between Pakistan and the U.S. have reached new heights compared to what they were two years ago, the Prime Minister said, adding that his visit to the United States on the invitation of President Obama will further strengthen these relations.
