The Magpies went down 3-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday despite dominating the first half before referee Robert Madley sent off skipper Fabricio Coloccini for an injury time foul on Steven Fletcher and awarded a penalty, which Adam Johnson converted.

Just after Newcastle vainly claimed a penalty at one end, Coloccini was judged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity by shouldering striker Steven Fletcher off the ball and Johnson drove his spot-kick low into the corner of the net.
Billy Jones and Fletcher added further goals for Sunderland in the second half to ensure that Allardyce would be their fourth successive manager to win this derby in his second match in charge.
Sunderland got their first Premier League win of the campaign in their 10th game, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table in the process.
But after steering home Yann M’Vila’s volley, Jones got himself on the scoresheet with a more meaningful goal, as the derby once again proved to be the launchpad of Sunderland’s season.
“We’ve struggled at the beginning of the season, but I hope it will be much better from now”. It was a double whammy – a penalty and down to 10 men.
“I think we’ll be lucky to get anyone back for next week, but hopefully they’ll only miss one game (at Everton)”.

It is a worry, that’s normal because we are now in the relegation positions, so we have to do better and win games soon.
