Robin van Persie, all-time top scorer for Netherlands, not selected for friendlies

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has been left out of the latest Netherlands squad after a poor run of form.

Asked about Memphis, Blind said: “I think Depay is a player for the future”.

The Telegraaf are claiming Blind doesn’t believe van Persie is “fit enough” for global football. He doesn’t always do that.

And his worldwide boss Blind, the father of Reds team-mate Daley, criticised his approach ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Wales and Germany.

They finished third at the 2014 World Cup finals when Van Persie was captain but failed to qualify for Euro 2016 after finishing fourth in their group behind Czech Republic, Iceland and Turkey.

Depay needs to get back into the United team and start playing well.

“Of the last five games, he has been in the team at United just once”.

“He is at a stage of his career where he must adapt to many things”.

Mind you, this is the same source that suggest United are ready to pay £57m for 34-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the coming months, despite his age and the fact that he’s actually available on a free transfer – as it stands – in the summer. Hopefully this decision will trigger a positive response from the youngster and we’ll begin to see him performing well for Manchester United again in the weeks to come.

While Blind says he hopes to welcome Van Persie back into the fold in the next global break in March, his concerns about the forward shows the 32-year-old’s 101st cap could be his last.

“I have to look to the future”, he said. And I think he did not play well’. Oranje benefits from experienced players.

There are three Southampton players in the squad – Maarten Stekelenburg, Jordy Clasie and Virgil van Dijk – and Newcastle provide two players, Georginio Wijnaldum and Daryl Janmaat.
