The track brought in combined sales of a few 330 thousand in its opening week, the largest since X Factor victor James Arthur’s track “Impossible” in December 2012.

But it’s not the first time Adele has broken records…

Previous album 21 remains the biggest record of the millennium, selling over 4million copies.

This is only Adele’s second number one single, after 2011’s Someone Like You.

Adele has been teasing her new album, released on Novemeber, 20, over on Facebook too.

The singer made a much-trumpeted return to the limelight last week when she released the first track from her forthcoming album, 25. Acts Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Little Mix and even Justin Bieber are pushing their release dates forward to make way for 25, which is slated to drop late this month (Nov. 20).

In this week’s chart Justin Bieber’s new song, Sorry, was forced to settle for secondplace.

Elsewhere Drake swoops in to claim number three with “Hotline Bling”, while Sam Smith’s Bond theme “Writing’s On The Wall” climbs seven places to four and The Weeknd’s “The Hills” completes the Top 5.
