Sam Smith’s ‘Drowning Shadows’ Is The ‘Saddest Song’ He’s Ever Written
The pop star, 23, describes the forthcoming track as the “saddest” song that he’s ever written.

Speaking about the track – which features on the soon-to-be-released deluxe edition of his album, In The Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition – Sam told Zane: ‘This is proper, really dark… “I wanted to remind everyone where I come from as a songwriter and what my intent was when I made this album”. Drowning Shadows, one of the tracks on the repackaged album, is the “least radio-friendly song” he has ever penned.
Over the weekend, the crooner confessed he would be taking a break after the promotional period for his Spectre song, Writing’s On The Wall. “Something didn’t work. I thought of it recently when we thought about the repackage and we did it with piano”, he said. “It’s really weird – I feel like I’m actually at this stage where I’m going to be ready to release something not far away”.
“Even if the album and music is ready, I’ll come back to it and listen to it. I want to make every single song on the album the greatest”.
He revealed he wrote “Shadows” before “Stay With Me” and other tracks on “In The Lonely Hour”, but he held onto it because he couldn’t get the production just right. “I don’t know what I want to talk about yet, y’know”. But it helped him return to listening to his childhood favourites, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, and his passion for music was reborn.

“My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend a few time dating”, Smith said. He said, “It’s about me getting in a taxi and on the way back there was like a crossroads”.
