Russian Plane Carrying At Least 200 Passengers ‘Missing’ Over Egypt’s Sinai

“Since this morning the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) assisted with aerial surveillance in the efforts to locate the Russian airplane that lost contact over the Sinai Peninsula”.

He added that all the passengers on board were Russian holiday-makers.

Her post said the missing plane belonged to the Kogalymavia airline, which is also known as Metrojet.

It says the plane was bound for St. Petersburg in Russian Federation and a search and rescue team is looking for the plane.

Sergei Lzvolsky, an official with the Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsia told Interfax news agency that the plane had departed Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh at 5:51am local time (11:51am Singapore Time). There is no word as of yet to why the airliner crashed, however, Egyptian security sources have said that there is no indication that the plane was shot down. He said the aircraft did not make contact with Cypriot authorities.

According to Reuters, the plane was reported safe and contacted Turkish air traffic control. Officials from the Transport Ministry and the Civilian Air Transport Authority did not answer calls.

Egypt’s state-run Middle East News Agency said Prime Minister Sherif Ismail had canceled a visit to the city of Ismailiya and formed an operations room to follow up on the situation.
