10,000 evacuated as two typhoons approach China

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) predicted that among the three typhoons Chan-hom, Linfa and Nangka that had formed on the northwest Pacific, Chan-hom and Linfa will affect China in the coming days.

“The threat from Typhoon Chan-Hom is greater than that brought by Tropical Storm Linfa, so the nation needs to pay close attention to it”, Wu said. A typhoon watch is in effect for three sparsely populated Northern Marianas islands, Agrihan, Pagan and Alamagan. That would make the fourth Category 5-equivalent super typhoon of what’s already been a busy season. Hong Kong’s weather forecast for the following week is set to be cloudy with isolated showers.

It was packing maximum sustained winds of 83 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 108 kilometers per hour, the bureau said. It was moving northwestward toward the south of the Taiwan Strait at 7kph. Throughout the current Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) 5-day forecast, Nangka is not expected to impact any inhabited islands, though it is possible that the USA Commonwealth island of Saipan may experience tropical storm force winds later in the week if Nangka’s track shifts southwards. From Guam, the storm was 765 miles east.

However, Tsai said that the sea alert for Linfa would not be lifted until tomorrow morning, when the storm is projected to move away from the outlying island of Kinmen.

Right now. Nangka is traveling due west, exiting the Marshall Islands and entering Micronesia, about 115 miles east of Enewetak Atoll as of 3 p.m.

As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, Typhoon Linfa’s center is about 390 km southeast of the boundary between Fujian and Guangdong provinces in the South China Sea.

Too soon to say whether it will threaten Japan, Okinawa or other land masses; it’s simply too far east and Nangka is just two days old.

Tropical Storm Linfa unlikely to bring typhoon signal, but rain to come this
