Tennessee Titans Fire Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt
The Titans were 3-20 under Whisenhunt and have lost six straight this year after a 42-14, opening-week win.

When Whisenhunt has had a quarterback, he has proven himself to be a more than capable coach.
The Titans went 2-14 in Whisenhunt’s debut season.
“It’s hard to win as a head coach without a quarterback”, Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said. By firing the head coach and replacing him with an interim one, the Titans now have two interim spots and one mainstay. Next year, he may have another head coach, meaning he’ll have to learn a new offense altogether. Overall, he is 48-71 as a head coach in the NFL.
Jenkins, for instance, was a rookie with the New Orleans Saints when they beat the Cardinals in the 2009-10 playoffs, but the primary concern of the Saints’ defense that day wasn’t Whisenhunt’s scheme or Whisenhunt’s play-calling or Whisenhunt at all.
“I’m operating from a position here where I don’t have much I can say”, Whisenhunt told reporters on Monday.
“Without showing our hand, things that going back to my days in Pittsburgh as a coordinator, with a quarterback that’s as talented as Marcus (Mariota) is, his ability to do a few things like I had with Kordell (Stewart) back in Pittsburgh, and then his ability to do like Matt (Ryan) I had in Atlanta, ” Mularkey said.
While the Titans won their season opener, the team hasn’t won since, falling to a 1-6 record. “We’re in here working, we’re trying, and we feel like we’ve done a few things that have been good. But they’re obviously not good enough”. Whisenhunt lasted only 23 games over two seasons as coach of the Titans, going 3-20.
He hasn’t played since Week 6 against Miami and in the next two games Zach Mettenberger’s stepped in to start for the Titans. It was a low point for the Titans, but Underwood said the possibility of a coaching change had been in the air well before that.
‘When you’re not winning and you can’t win, that’s when change happens in the National Football League, ‘ team president Steve Underwood said. Either way, though, it seemed clear that Whisenhunt wasn’t getting it done and that his time in Tennessee was drawing near to an end.

Safety Michael Griffin, the longest-tenured player on the roster, wrote in a text message that anyone hates someone getting fired, but everyone knows this is a business. It’s just one of the reasons ownership decided to make a change.
