While lunches had been included with tickets in previous years, a pricetag of €20 was attached to a feed for the Web Summit’s final year in Dublin.

The Government should get down on its knees and beg Paddy Cosgrave to bring Web Summit back to Dublin, according to Liam Cunningham.

Paddy Cosgrave had been due to do the interview but had to withdraw and Sharon Ni Bheoláin certainly didn’t hold back when grilling Hickey about how the move away from Ireland materialised.

The Web Summit will see more than 40,000 people from about 134 countries gather here for three days of talks, workshops and networking.

Around 1,000 speakers including the founders and chief executives of Dell, Instagram and Ford will address topics on technology, fashion, marketing, money and more.

The minister said a recent start-up gathering was “a phenomenal success”. He said the government welcomed what the event had done “in putting Ireland on the map over the last few years”.

Nash expressed optimism that his ambition for Ireland to become a “hub for startups” by 2020 can be achieved.

Connectivity was one of the issues Mr Cosgrave had raised when discussing the summit’s future with Taoiseach Enda Kenny before moving the conference to Lisbon.
