49ers to bench Colin Kaepernick, start Blaine Gabbert against Falcons

The San Francisco 49ers will reportedly sideline their quarterback Colin Kaepernick following a crushing first half of the season that has left the team floundering at 2-6.

Remember in June 2014 when the Niners signed Kaepernick to a six-year deal worth over 0 million, including $61 million in guaranteed money?

Kaepernick has six touchdown and five interceptions this season with a 59.3 completion percentage. Gabbert has been an National Football League bust since the Jaguars selected him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Yes, the same Blaine Gabbert who holds a 5-22 career record and more career interceptions (24) than touchdown passes (23). After leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl that season, Kaepernick never let go of the job. On top of that, San Francisco’s running back and receiving corps have been battered. They have already started to ship their talent elsewhere, with Vernon Davis being traded to the Denver Broncos prior to the trade deadline.

What are a few possible trade destinations for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick now that he’s been benched?

“If there was a guy that I would look at, if I was in Chip Kelly’s position, he’s a guy that I would take a serious, serious look at”, Jaworski said. As Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson pointed out earlier this season, the 49ers gave Kaepernick a contract that had a total value of $126 million but they could get out of easily if he regressed badly.

That leads us to the next question: who starts? According to NFL.com, the 49ers offensive line has allowed the third-most sacks in the league (28).

The 49ers have not scored a touchdown in two games.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn was previously at Seattle and knows the 49ers from playing them twice a year in the NFC West. But we’ve seen him play well.

The Jaguars certainly didn’t help Gabbert by surrounding him with subpar talent, but if he gets that excuse in his favor, surely Kaepernick deserves the same. Expect Gabbert to crumble under the pressure and turn the ball over repeatedly, all en route to a coaching change at the end of the season and a complete rebuilding process for the 49ers after the 2015 season.

Kaepernick’s benching has added even more juice to the rumors that he may be on the trading block. Neither can pass protect and neither can run block particularly well, and Kaepernick has been under constant assault from opposing defenses.

“It’s how we call things, scheme, putting players in the best position we can put them in”, Tomsula said.
