Shearer: Time is right for United to drop Rooney

At Crystal Palace on Saturday, Rooney managed only one shot on goal.

Pardew, in criticising their willingness to “target” Yohan Cabaye, also appeared to acknowledge that the modern United have a far more negative approach than that which has previously brought them such success. They have scored only 15 goals in 11 Premier League games and Martial’s header in the 1-1 draw at CSKA two weeks ago was the last time they found the net.

Manchester United could do with an attacking spark, so news that the Dutch winger will not return for this evening’s Champions League tie with CSKA Moscow is inconvenient, to say the least.

“Andrei Kanchelskis [right] celebrates with Roy Keane [left] during his time at Manchester United”.

The Dutchman also offered an injury update on defender Luke Shaw, who is nearly two months into his recovery from the broken leg he suffered in United’s opening Champions League match of the season away to PSV Eindhoven. Now we have a bad period because it is a bad period when you do not score goals.

But, after watching Man United’s stale and lifeless 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday, Allen disagrees.

Rooney had the best chance to score for his side, but a one-on-one opening was smothered by Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey before the striker could shoot at goal.

And Shearer feels it would be in both United’s and Shearer’s best interests if Van Gaal took his struggling striker out of the firing line for a spell.

“Overall, when we look at the last three games, we played very good against Everton, played good against (Manchester) City and should have won as we were the only team pushing to win and (against Palace) we’ve drawn so we could have had nine points”.

Clive Allen has told talkSPORT Manchester United will have no chance of winning the Premier League this season if they continue with Louis van Gaal’s passing-heavy game plan. They have always done that and I hope they shall be the 12th player again.

“He has more credits than any other player”.

At the moment, Group B of the competition is led by German club Wolfsburg with six points, while United and CSKA are close behind with four points.

Morgan Schneiderlin missed training on the eve of the game against CSKA because of a “personal issue”, but could be available for selection.
