Coble also served as the state’s secretary of revenue from 1973 to 1979. He never met a stranger and set the standard for constituent service. He was the assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1969 until 1973. “We will continue to keep his family and friends in our prayers during this hard time”.
Coble was a Republican and represented District 6, which includes portions of Greensboro and Durham, for 30 years. Coble, who was born in Greensboro, had an intimacy with the region – liking to ask voters where they went to high school and proceeding to recall the school’s mascot. He notably refused to take a congressional pension in line with his fiscally conservative values.
The former congressman was one of the longest-serving representatives in Congress. Coble was a Greensboro native and graduated from Guilford College in 1953. He began public service by enlisting and serving in the United States Coast Guard from 1952 until 1956.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Howard Coble, who was not only my congressman but also my mentor and friend”, Berger said in a release. – N.C. Governor Pat McCrory.
“He was a true statesman and represented his constituents with passion and effectiveness”, said U.S. Senator Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican.
During his time in Washington, Congressman Coble demonstrated that tone and approach still matter in politics. “Our community was blessed to have had his leadership in Washington for thirty years, but we were even more blessed to call him a friend and mentor”.
He represented the 6th District, which included Davidson County until 2013, after the lines were redrawn based on the 2010 census.
Coble won election to Congress in 1984 and served until announcing his retirement in 2014.
“I held that seat, folks, subject to two-year leases, subject to revocation or renewal”, Coble said during his 2013 announcement to retire. “Renewal’s always better given that choice”.
