Mets rumors: Yoenis Cespedes unlikely to remain with team
The Amazin’s became the first team in major league history to reach the World Series after being last in runs scored in MLB on July 31.

Now, the front office is tasked with putting together a team that can replicate that and push for more next year.
A Mets’ source tells Rubin that the team expects to “modestly pursue” Cespedes in free agency, but they are preparing as if he will walk. While there has been nothing to suggest this, they could sell high on one of these youngsters and bolster their offense.
Nobody was on a bigger roller coaster ride this postseason than Daniel Murphy. Now they must decide how far to carry him.
Flores, who played shortstop for the majority of this season, had a triple slash of.263/.295/.408 to go along with 16 home runs.
Game 3: Even in the 1 game they won, blew a 2-1 lead in the 2nd. Facing a must-win World Series Game 5, the Mets were not marveling at Cespedes’ production. After the Mets traded for him, the player and team agreed to alter the language in his contract that would have prevented the Mets from re-signing him this winter. “I”d like to come back. The Mets don’t have to lose him for nothing, though. Headley signed a four-year, $52-million contract before 2015. The Mets rarely spend in that stratosphere and have given no indication that they’re willing to change for Cespedes.
The Mets should take a few time to soak in their 2015 season.
The outfielder hit.287/.337/.604 with 17 home runs in 57 regular season games with the Mets.
What about Daniel Murphy? The Mets never planned to keep Murphy once he hit free agency, and they have no reason to deviate from that now. In his first 13 postseason games, he hit.
Yet in the World Series, on the most important worldwide stage, when it mattered the most, that same God rejected Murphy. Maybe after the playoffs, Murphy whet someone’s whistle. 288 career hitter with middling power and subpar defensive skills-probably not a player worth breaking the bank for. The Mets are now likely to make him a $15.8 million qualifying offer.
“I like it here”, Murphy said. These toxic feelings could only be exacerbated by a cult of Murphy, a growing fan base that lauds him as the Mets’ savior.
But how? It remains unclear whether 21-year-old prospect Dilson Herrera can hold down second base on a full-time basis. The Mets have plenty of young starting pitching and could look to deal one of their arms for a big bat.
“You have (Zack) Wheeler coming back and other good arms”, the agent said. Harvey won’t be a free agent until after the 2018 season; deGrom is locked up through 2020. Syndergaard and Matz have even longer to go. The astonishing bungle drew instant comparisons between Murphy and Bill Buckner, the former Mets player behind baseball’s most infamous fielding error.
