The Merced Sun-Star is reporting the suspect was a male student in his 20s.

The school initially said the suspect had been apprehended, but campus police later said officers had shot and killed him.

The campus will be closed Thursday, November 5, and all classes canceled, though counseling services will remain available.

UC Merced said via Twitter that all the victims were not students, correcting its earlier report.

The incident began shortly before 8 a.m.in a classroom in the Classroom and Office Building, Leland said.

Nothing further is yet known about the victims’ condition, or the identity of the attacker. He was shot and killed by pursuing campus police on a nearby foot bridge. Police responding. Please avoid the area. Campus police are investigating the stabbing, and the sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting. Officials said they were still working out a timeline of events leading up to the stabbings, and it wasn’t clear how the attack played out.

“Just to see something like that happen, it could have been me”, she said.

Anderson said classes have been canceled for the day.

UC Merced has an enrollment of more than 6,000 students.

“The situation is under control”, the school said on its website.

Three of the victims had injuries that were minor enough for them to be treated on campus, Waid said. Student Alex Lopez, 21, was heading to class when he realized something was wrong. “It shouldn’t happen here, it shouldn’t happen anywhere, but thinking that a campus so small and so new, you see familiar faces everywhere”.
