Opening play at the refurbished Bercy Arena, the 22-year-old Thiem saved five of the six break points he faced to set up a second-round match with Kevin Anderson.

“I have had a few things that I could have done better tonight”, Djokovic said. “But again, all in all, it was a very solid match”.

David Ferrer, the 2012 champion, also progressed to the third round by beating Alexandr Dogolpolov 6-2, 6-2. “I wasn’t in a good position, that’s for sure, serving at 2-5”, Wawrinka told reporters.

Wawrinka, who has never advanced past the quarterfinals at the indoor tournament, will next face either 15th-seeded Feliciano Lopez or Viktor Troicki.

Among the 11 French players in the main draw, three have already gone home as Benoit Paire rallied past two-time runner-up Gael Monfils 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in an all-French encounter and wild-card entry Nicolas Mahut also bowed out in the first round, losing 7-5, 6-3 to qualifier Dusan Lajovic.

Meanwhile, Ferrer needed only an hour to defeat Dolgopolov and will face 12th-seeded Marin Cilic or Grigor Dimitrov in the next round. Karlovic will finish 2015 with 1447 aces, just 30 shy of the record set by Goran Ivanisevic set in 1996.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was given a decent workout by Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci as he opened his Paris Masters campaign with a 7-5 6-3 second-round win.

Also advancing to the second round: Lukas Rosol, Jeremy Chardy, Roberto Bautista Agut and Borna Coric.
