Bradley Cooper’s Burnt Gets Toasted
Our Brand is Crisis set a new low in the opening weekend numbers for a film led by Bullock, and it’s actually a movie that deserved the low numbers.

The political dramedy “Our Brand Is Crisis” opened with just $3.4 million, coming in No. 7 and marking the smallest nationwide start of Sandra Bullock’s career. Fellow opener “Burnt” was met with similarly disappointing results this weekend, earning only $5 million, despite its release in 2,900 theatres.
Absent meaningful competition from the week’s newcomers, “The Martian” wins its second straight (and fourth total) weekend box office. Paramount’s “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” was brutalized when it kicked off to roughly $1.7 million across 1,509 locations.
Sony’s Goosebumps placed No. 2 with an estimated $10 million for a domestic total of roughly $57 million. It debuted to a terrible $US3.4 million across 2,202 theatres. Burnt, which cost $20 million to produce, earned a B- CinemaScore and was skewered by reviewers, scoring a 26% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“For “The Martian” to take the number one spot yet again – and this time in its fifth weekend – is a rather sad commentary on how the newcomers into the marketplace are failing week after week to gain traction with audiences”, said Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian.
Like “Our Brand is Crisis”, “Burnt” was ravaged by critics, further alienating its target audience.
“We’re proud of the movie”, said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros executive vice president of distribution.
The lackluster performance was partly attributed to Paramount Pictures’ decision to bring the movie to home video more quickly, prompting a few theater chains to refuse to show it. Scouts Guide will be available as video-on-demand 17 days after the film’s North American theater count drops below 300.
Bullock didn’t provide details about how the Academy Award-winning actress and the political consultant nicknamed “Bush’s brain” linked up, but she said it was Rove’s idea.
“But I think this is a really good lesson learned for Hollywood that if you have too much product – particularly aimed at older audiences – you’re going to fragment the audience to the point where a lot of movies are going to become casualties of that crowded marketplace”. It opens in the USA on Friday and in Singapore on Thursday.
