Iran’s Religious Leader Explains ‘Death to America’ Chant

“The Leader of the Islamic Revolution said the takeover of the USA embassy by a group of students was a reaction to the continuation of Washington’s conspiracies and the Americans” sheltering of the definitive enemy of the nation, Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi.

“They need to be viewed in the context of the domestic political struggle between the government and other factions”, Tabatabai says.

While moderate President Rouhani is keen to normalize relations with the West after the deal, supporters of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei used this year’s rallies across the country to argue the historic agreement would not lead to any rapprochement between Tehran and Washington. On 4th November 1979, radical student militants had forcibly occupied the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. They seized dozens of hostages, holding 52 for more than 14 months.

Protesters on Wednesday chanted “Death to America”, “God damn America”, and “No compromise, no surrender to U.S.” as they urged Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator not to “trust the Americans”. “The slogan means death to USA policies and arrogance” – a construction that doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as easily as “Death to America”. The stated reason for the closure was that the décor too closely resembled the American flag and the restaurant could be seen as an example of American influence on Iranian culture.

A big majority of Iranian lawmakers-192 members of the country’s 290-seat parliament-made the assertion in a statement published by state news agency IRNA.

NHK’s website also quoted Salehi as saying it was important that there be “balance” in implementing the deal, signaling Tehran’s stance that all sanctions against Iran should be lifted promptly in step with its dismantling of nuclear infrastructure.

Khamenei reiterated his warning that the U.S.is not to be trusted despite the nuclear deal reached with the USA, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. “They’ll both go on like this”.

Political scientist Sadegh Zibakalam, a professor at Tehran University, told The Guardian that the nuclear deal will most likely translate into greater electoral support for the liberals in the 2016 Parliamentary elections. “If they could destroy the Islamic Republic today, they would not hesitate for a moment”, he said on Tuesday.

Another apparent fissure emerged Tuesday when Iranian state TV announced the arrest of a Lebanese technology expert, Nizar Ahmad Zakka, who worked in the United States and was accused by Iran of “deep ties” to the US military. “To fight the British, Mossadegh relied on America and this optimism, simplicity and negligence, preparing the ground for the successful American coup”, Khamenei said.

Nevertheless, it is more likely that Iran nuclear deal to be approved and Iran to return to market by 2016 with 500,000 barrels production rise.
