El Niño After All? – Mammoth Opening November 5th

Ski resorts and local businesses in California hope an early snow storm this week means there will be no re-run of last year’s disappointing season on the slopes.

Cool temperatures bode well for snow-making operations. At present, Chairs 1 and 3 will be spinning for opening day, but with additional snow it’s possible that we’ll be adding terrain. Opening day lift tickets were being offered at a discounted rate of $50 – almost half of what one usually costs – as the mountain was only partially open.

With a chance of light snow expected to continue and cold temperatures in the long-range forecast, the resort has fired up snowmaking operations. Many are saying these were the best opening day conditions Mammoth has had in the past five years, but as we sit in SoCal with our board strapped to our feet, drooling over the sight of fresh snow, we’re not claiming anything. A storm came through earlier this week and dropped a foot of snow at the base and more than two feet at the summit, according to NBC’s Los Angeles affiliate.

In the Lake Tahoe area (also about 400 miles from SLO), Mt. Rose opened this week, Boreal Mountain Resort opens on Friday and Northstar California is scheduled to open November 20.
