Three days of mourning in the Romanian capital are planned for the victims of the Colectiv fire, including a candlelight vigil Saturday outside the venue.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said, “We already have indications that the legal regulations had not been respected”. “People are disgusted that such a thing could happen and I hope we manage to have results of the inquiry as soon as possible and to change norms so that things like this never happen again”.
According to information on the Colectiv club’s Facebook page, last night’s show featured the metal band Goodbye to Gravity, which was launching a new album by playing a free show. Hospital sources said 10 were in a critical condition.
At least 25 people were reported to be in serious condition at the Municipal Hospital. He has made a vow to do everything in his power to ensure that nothing like the Bucharest nightclub fire ever happens again.
“The club was packed with about 300 people inside for a rock concert with a pyrotechnic show”, she said.
The crowd panicked as thick smoke engulfed the room, leaving people scrambling to escape from the underground club located in a communist-era basement.
The authorities created seven help lines where people can inquire about their relatives and check whether they are among the dead: 021/2069291, 021/3130605, 021/2069283, 021/2648704, 021/2648525, 021/2069375 and 021/3122547. “It was total chaos, people were trampling on each other”, Victor Ionescu, who was at the club, told local TV station Antena 3.
The panicked concert-goers stampeded toward the only available emergency exit, the witness said.
George Gaman, a fire investigator instructed by the local authorities to investigate the cause of the fire, said only one fire extinguisher was used and there were no sprinklers installed.
A dozen ambulances rushed to the club, but were unable to handle the number of victims, and many were forced to take themselves to the hospital in cars or taxis.
Fireworks and restricted exits have been a lethal combination in many nightclub fires around the world.
