Maldives declares 30-day state of emergency

The parliamentarians debated on the no-confidence motion filed against Adeeb, 33, for two hours before it was put up for vote, Haveeru newspaper reported.

On Wednesday, the president declared a state of emergency saying that the explosion and subsequent discovery of arms posed a threat to national security.

The president, who came to power in 2013 following a controversial election, was unhurt, though the first lady and two others were injured.

On Monday, the military said it found a homemade bomb in a parked vehicle close to the president’s official residence.

The raid comes after President Yameen declared a 30-day nationwide state of emergency on Wednesday, citing threats to national security and raising fears of imminent attacks.

“The USA calls on the Government of Maldives to restore immediately full constitutional freedoms to its citizens by terminating the state of emergency”, State Department Spokesman John Kirby said. Mr Adeeb is already under arrest accused of links to the September 28 blast aboard the presidential speed boat. He was not brought to Parliament to face charges before the vote, Shameem said.

Fifty-eight members of the ruling bloc voted in favour of the declaration while 14 voted against it. Three parliamentarians abstained.

Although during the course of emergency curfew will not be imposed, and all worldwide and domestic airports will remain operational.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke in May of “troubling signs” for democracy in the Maldives, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this year shelved plans to visit the islands, a move seen as a rebuke to Yameen.

This is the latest round of political unrest in the Maldives.

Under emergency laws, eight provisions of the constitution have been suspended, including the freedom of assembly and the freedom of movement.

In a post on its official Twitter account, the ministry said the measure would be in place for 30 days.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office updated its travel advice to the Maldives last week.
