Detroit Lions Fire GM Martin Mayhew and President Tom Lewand
The Detroit Lions have begun cleaning house. He was promoted to vice president of pro personnel in 2009. They come out in droves to watch their team but this season has been harder and harder to do so.

I like Lewand and Mayhew. In an interview with Kevin McShan of the 2 Man Advantage podcast yesterday afternoon, the question of who I thought the Lions would part ways with in 2016 was asked. Very high draft picks were spent on each guy.
Mayhew and Lewand were both fired today.
Because these are the Detroit Lions we’re talking about…
Lewand had been team president since 2010 and Mayhew had been general manager since 2008. Allison Maki, formerly senior vice president of administration and chief financial officer, will be interim chief operating officer. Both will report directly to Ford, the owner said.
These moves were a necessary evil.
Sieb adds, “Even when they were 0-16, I was still a Lions fan and this year they’ve already won one game so it’s kind of like a winning season for us”. “I’m just being calm, being reserved, and coming through with that challenge and tying to tackle everything as they come”.
Caldwell – one of the few central figures around the Lions’ collapse to continue in his same role in the organization – said in June that Ford “knows football” and that she’s involved with the team, reading, studying and inquiring about specific players.
Well, at least Lions fans now have a sign that Martha Ford has risen from the grave to care about the team. Last week, offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and two offensive line coaches were also let go. There were too many pieces involved that needed to be on the same page and there was too much disconnect between management and the coaching staff. The Lions need a more simplistic approach: One GM that makes all of the final decisions in regards to managing the players and the money.
The Detroit Lions (1-7) have been the worst team in the National Football League this season and Lions’ fans were starting to wonder who would be the first ones to pay the price. The Lions had losing records in every season during that stretch.
While Ford has been complimentary of Caldwell, there are no guarantees that he will be kept around.

Meanwhile, assistant general manager Brian Xanders is expected to take over Mayhew’s duties. That’s a disaster in most places but when he was replaced, he was replaced by his protégé, Chuck Schmidt, who drafted Barry Sanders but couldn’t maximize it. He was done in 2000.
