Israeli army: Palestinian shot after driving vehicle into troops
Israel is to free a Palestinian detainee who survived a two-month hunger strike later Wednesday after holding him for a year without trial, the prison service said. Violence from Gaza after Israel’s pullout only fueled the skepticism over peace prospects.

Ascherman heads a group called Rabbis for Human Rights, which for more than a decade has been accompanying Palestinian farmers to their olive groves during the harvest season, when attacks by extremist settlers typically spike. Speaking to the United Nations in September, Abbas accused Israel of threatening Palestinian religious rights at the Temple Mount, a charge Israel vehemently denies. But such voices have been rare.
