Obama considering all options to close Guantanamo

In a survey conducted from January 15-16 of 800 likely voters, Rasmussen Reports found that 53 percent of respondents do not approve of the plan to close Guantanamo Bay, and only 29 percent support Obama’s aggressive moves.

Closing Guantanamo “has always been the President’s goal and remains a high priority”, a senior administration official told AFP.

The spending cuts contained in the revised bill passed by the House on Thursday reflect a budget agreement between the Obama administration and the Republican-controlled Congress that addresses the president’s main concern about the bill – the use of war funds to let the Pentagon avoid mandatory spending cuts.

“This administration has continually gone around the Congress and tried to figure out which button to push to irritate Congress the most”, said Sen. “Well he positive as hell has pushed my button”.

The new closure proposal, drafted by Obama’s top counterterror advisor Lisa Monaco and Defence Secretary Ash Carter would lift congressional restrictions on transferring detainees to the United States.

As he spoke, Roberts got visibly angry.

The plan – expected to surface as early as this week – will propose one or more prisons from a working list that includes facilities in Kansas, Colorado and South Carolina. The administration should also immediately increase the pace at which cleared detainees are transferred and other detainees are given administrative reviews of their statuses to determine if they can be transferred.

“It’s onerous for me to consider which you could ship a workforce of specialists to research the place you are going to ship detainees to satisfy a marketing campaign promise if you have not spent any cash”, he stated.

Scott says moving the terrorists into the USA would be the worst decision for American national security.

“That plan should be approved by Congress”, McCain said on Thursday.

The White House didn’t mention the long-standing veto threat yesterday in comments about pending vote, but did suggest the president might use an executive order to unilaterally close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay at a few point in the future.

Hinting at possible executive action, Earnest said he wouldn’t take anything off the table when it comes to the president doing everything he can to close the prison.

“It may well be that he is willing to take the political hit and that the legacy costs of not closing Guantanamo are starting to dwarf the political costs of closing it”, Vladeck said.

The act has been previously vetoed a version of the act that closes the prison.

The protection bill was trimmed by $ 5 billion to align it with the price range settlement.
