Groups take sides as text of trade deal is released

The trade agreement is expected to undergo a “rigorous review” in order to determine whether it meets the standards set by Congress, according to Hatch.

Among the most powerful critics of the deal is Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton who has already stated she is against it. The trade deal includes the US, Japan, Mexico and New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Peru, Canada, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Agreement on the pact, which was more than five years in the making, was trumpeted a month ago after intense talks in Atlanta broke a deadlock over trade in dairy products, pharmaceuticals and autos.

The debate over the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the free-trade pact between the United States and 11 other countries, is about to heat up. He called the deal “as bad for America’s family farmers and ranchers as we had feared”.

On Thursday, US President Barack Obama officially notified Congress of his intention to sign the deal, however he must collect support in Washington to ensure it is going to be officially approved. It is dense in its detail, laying out plans for the handling of trade in everything from zinc dust to railway sleepers and live eels.

Ms Kelsey says the text of the agreement has blown holes in the Government’s previously-released information and the ISDS provisions go far beyond those in New Zealand’s existing free trade agreements. The TPP will immediately reduce the tariff to Japan, our largest market for USA beef, from 38.5 percent to 27.5 percent.

The government will examine what impact the TPP agreements will have, and after reporting its assessment to the National Assembly and holding public hearings, make a decision on how to approach the mega trading bloc.

In response to USA pressure, TPP countries agreed to give drug companies about eight years of protection from cheaper competitors for biologics, which are ultra-expensive medicines produced in living cells.

And that it’ll be good for American workers. Vietnam will not get the economic benefits of closer trade with the United States, as provided in the pact, unless it abides by the two countries’ separate agreement, he said.

“In the days and weeks ahead, I will be talking with Oregon workers, farmers and ranchers, manufacturers, and innovators to learn what this agreement will do for them”.
