Grandmom shreds $1 million rather than giving it to relatives

Was she just mean spirited or acting out in disgust at perceived or actual slights?

The Detroit News-Times reported that the woman cut up all her banknotes and savings books in tiny pieces and left them on her bed in the retirement home where she was living before she died.

An 85-year-old Austrian grandmother cut up 950,000 euros – the equivalent of greater than $1 million – fairly than abandon it to her heirs.

But it looks like the woman’s family will, in fact, be able to recover at least a few of the money.

“If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced”, Hammerschimdt told Kurier.

The discovery was first made public in the Austrian Kurier daily newspaper, and then confirmed by state prosecutors, AFP reported.

When people don’t want to leave money to their relatives, it is usually specified in a will, but one senior in Austria chose to take a more unusual approach.

Despite the elderly woman’s attempts to disinherit her family, it appears her surviving family members will have the last laugh after Austria’s central bank (OeNB) announced it would replace all the shredded money.
