Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank on Thursday after he ignored calls to halt and attempted to attack one of the soldiers at a crowded bus stop, the military said. They note his long history of supporting nonviolent resistance, reiterated as recently as September in a speech to the United Nations, and the continued cooperation of Palestinian security forces with their Israeli counterparts.

There are more than 6,500 Palestinians now languishing in detention facilities throughout Israel, according to official Palestinian figures.
